Tomorrow its a brave new journey for me. I've joined HCL and I'll be serving a Truely Indian Company. I was so far with, what I perceive as a semi-indian company. Basically a sister concern of an American company run by an Indian. So its an Indian-American's company.
My Ex-company stood for Products. From president to end-users, all in the chain are technocrats. I hardly found a true businessman in the whole chain. May be they were out of reach for my position(When I was out, I was a Team Lead).
The products were designed to be used by experts in IT industry. You guessed it right. AMI's focus was on products for OEMs. They never went to the market.
They never required a business man to deal with the business, they only required techno savvy persons to bag the techno savvy customers(OEMs).
Whenever a biz guy comes into picture, they either get lashes - basically to get tammed - from the techno guys or they take their pie and wait for thier turn, which in my opinion would never come!
For 9 golden years I have enjoyed AMI's environment. The most nourishing environment with 100% freedom to enrich oneself. The empowerment of an employee was not a choice for the management, but the very nature of AMI. I am sure my colleagues' reading this blog would nod for sure with a grin in their face as a matter of acceptance!
What I saw in HCL in the first day of my induction program was an eye opener to me. Vineet Nayar the CEO of HCL, made a beautiful point. He made a point that instead of taking the IPs to the market, we will make IPs for the market. Well, in his words, "Instead of taking the Technocrats ideas to business men for marketing, HCL took the business men's objectives to the Technocrats to make solutions".
It is the business men who interacts with the clients and public at large, atleast expected to, and it is his responsibility to deliver what the market requires and he takes the help of technocrats to create a solution for the public that is addressed.
In Technology driven companies, people go on creating IPs. They create ideas, new ideas and call it worth billions. Now how much they are aligned to the business perspective of the company is always a question mark and when the ideas did not align to the business perspective the idea becomes week.
In my opinion, a tecnocrat is a tool which the businessman uses to do business in HCL, while the technocrat in AMI use the businessmen as a tool to push their ideas in to market!
